Aakash Chopra rings alarm bells to RCB’s tactic of releasing star bowlers ahead of IPL 2024 auction

Aakash Chopra on RCB

On the retention deadline day for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, all 10 franchises took strategic measures to shape their squads for the upcoming season. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) stood out by releasing a total of 11 players, including some high-profile them, overseas talents.

RCB’s bold moves in bowling department

Notably, RCB made headlines by parting ways with star bowlers Wanindu Hasaranga (bought for INR 10.75 crore), Harshal Patel (bought for INR 10.75 crore), and Josh Hazlewood (bought for INR 7.75 crore). The franchise also bid farewell to other bowling assets David Willey, Wayne Parnell, and Michael Bracewell.

Aakash Chopra points out bowling concerns

Reacting to RCB’s strategic decisions, former India opener and renowned commentator Aakash Chopra expressed his concerns, particularly focusing on the team’s bowling department. In a video posted on his YouTube channel, Chopra highlighted the potential shortcomings in RCB’s bowling attack.

Cameron Green‘s acquisition by RCB was acknowledged by Chopra as a move that would strengthen the team’s batting. However, he also pointed out that the franchise’s perennial bowling issues seem to have intensified with the release of key players.

“They (RCB) have released a lot of players. They made three big releases in Wanindu Hasaranga, Harshal Patel, and Josh Hazlewood. However, they have got Cameron Green. So their batting order will look like Faf du Plessis, Virat Kohli, Cameron Green, Rajat Patidar, Glenn Maxwell, and Dinesh Karthik – looks alright,” explained Chopra.

Bowling vacuum

Chopra emphasized the lack of fast bowlers and spinners in RCB’s retained squad, leaving a void that the team management needs to fill in the upcoming player auction. The seasoned commentator expressed uncertainty about how RCB plans to address this crucial aspect of their lineup.

“They don’t have any fast bowlers and spinners left. So they will have to shop for fast bowlers and spinners. How they will do that – I have got no idea,” added Chopra.
