Jos Buttler‘s tenure as England’s white-ball captain has faced scrutiny following a series of disappointing performances. Despite leading England to the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2024 in the United States of America (USA) and the West Indies, his captaincy has come under the microscope due to the team’s overall underwhelming performance.
Jos Buttler’s captaincy record in white-ball cricket for England
England’s early exit from the ODI World Cup 2023 and their inability to defend their T20 World Cup title have intensified the debate over his future as captain. Buttler has led England in 39 ODIs since 2016, with a record of 18 wins and 20 losses (plus one no result). In T20Is, he has a slightly better record, with 22 victories and 19 defeats from 41 matches. These results, coupled with the recent disappointing campaigns, have fueled concerns about his leadership and the team’s direction.

Marcus Trescothick’s verdict
Despite the ongoing criticisms, Marcus Trescothick, England’s interim white-ball coach, remained a staunch supporter of Buttler. Speaking to Sky Sports, Trescothick emphasized Buttler’s exceptional leadership qualities and his ability to keep the team unified despite recent challenges. Trescothick acknowledged the disruptions caused by the recent World Cup campaigns but firmly believes that Buttler is the right person to lead the team forward.
“I think he is the right person to lead the team. The attributes he shows behind the scenes are really important to lead this team. For whatever reason, the tough couple of World Cups they have had, they’ve potentially come out of those not feeling great about our one-day cricket, but it’s still in a really good place and Jos is going to lead that forward for a period of time at the moment, and I don’t see that changing,” Trescothick said.
Buttler’s injury and future prospects
However, Buttler’s availability for the upcoming T20I series against Australia remains uncertain due to a calf injury. He has not played competitive cricket since the T20 World Cup semi-final against India. Trescothick has been appointed as interim head coach for the series against Australia, which includes three T20Is and five ODIs, following Matthew Mott‘s departure.
Looking ahead, Buttler’s future as captain will continue to be a topic of discussion, especially with the arrival of Brendon McCullum, who will take over as England’s new white-ball coach. Despite the challenges and criticisms, Trescothick’s confidence in Buttler’s leadership suggests that he will continue to play a pivotal role in England’s white-ball cricket in the near future.
